Victor Korchnoi was one of the best chess players of the time. Korchnoi was a candidate for World Championship title in 10 occasions, nevertheless he was never able to obtain the title. Korchnoi has a long list of accomplishments including winning Soviet Chess Championship 4 times, winning European Team Championship 5 times, and winning Team Chess Olympiad 6 times. In 2006 he won Senior World Championship.
Korchnoi’s playing style was very universal, allowing him to play both actively and passively with good results. He was famous for his ability to counter attack, and was the hardest opponent for Mikhail Tal. He had plus scores against world champions Tal, Petrosian and Spassky. He defeated 9 (!!) undisputed world champions from Botvinnik to Kasparov, and Magnus Calrsen.
Victor Korchnoi is considered the strongest chess player that never became World Champion. Korchnoi played competitive chess up until 2012, when he had to retire for health reasons. In 2011 he scored an excellent win with black pieces against 2700+ rated 18-year-old Fabiano Caruana. Korchnoi died on June 6, 2016 in Switzerland.
