|5 Things Chess Players Should Focus on in 2017|

New Year means new beginning and new possibilities. But what exactly does it mean for your chess? You definitely don’t want to start from scratch. Whether you made it to 1200, 1500 or 1800 elo this year, you want to build upon what you already have to move forward. How do you make sure you reach your chess goals in 2017? Here are the 5 things you should focus on to make your chess dreams come true.
1. Setting short term and long term goals
Perhaps, one of the most important steps you should take in 2017 to maximize your success is start setting goals. It makes sense to split your goals into short term and long term goals. The short term goals are those you want to achieve in 7-14 day period. That maybe anything from waking up early to work on your game, solving 10 tactics problems per day for the next 2 weeks or playing at least 2 standard time control games this week.
Long term goals are the goals you want to achieve in 3-6 months period. Those goals are more serious and may include increasing rating by 100-200 points, achieving a norm or learning a new opening system, etc. Keep in mind that the short term goals are the stepping stones that are needed to achieve those long term goals. For example, in order to achieve an increase in elo by 100-200 points, you may need to start waking up early, solving 10 tactics problems a day and playing 1-2 competitive games per week. Goals are a great help to keeping track of progress and staying motivated.
2. Working on fundamentals
Many chess players struggle to improve because they are lacking certain simple things which disallow them from making further progress. This may be compared with poor arithmetic skills when studying mathematics. It is much harder to learn advanced math if you have problems with addition and subtraction. Same idea applies to chess. If you are lacking basic tactical awareness and middlegame understanding, it is rather hard to fully understand modern opening plans are ideas. The fastest way to learn it is to first come back to fundamentals and fully understand them. Once this is out of the way, the further improvement will come much faster and you will be shocked how quickly you can pick up those rating points.

3. Systemizing your chess training
Getting the fundamentals straightened out is only half of the battle. The other half of the improvement recipe is hidden in systematic training. If you looking for serious results, you need dedication and a well-designed training plan that is proven to work. There are many ways you can approach this. You can read books, hire coaches or watch video training courses. Each method has its own pros and cons. Hiring a coach may be fairly expensive. Studying solely from the books is slow and time consuming. While the video courses may not cover exactly what you need. The best method is perhaps combining multiple training elements into one training program. That’s something that we did with our 21 Day Course and it’s proven to be very successful at brining results over the past 3 years.
4. Getting enough rest
It seems to be a fairly obvious step, but getting enough sleep is something that can make or break your chess training. If you stay up till 3 in the morning every day, before waking up for work or school at 8 am, it is very hard to be efficient. It is much harder to absorb information and to learn new things when you have severe sleep deficit. Training would be much harder and the results will be far less apparent.
I suggest you to try getting enough sleep in 2017, and you will be impressed how much your overall productivity will increase. Things that normally took you 2-3 hours to complete, will get done in less than 90 minutes! That means you will be able to do the things you normally do much faster and better, resulting in more free time that you can use for anything you’d like including chess.
5. Trying new things
Lastly, I suggest you to try new things when it comes to chess. If you never played an officially rated tournament why not just join up and play? If you have never tried blindfolded chess before, you can attempt playing that as well. If you prefer certain time control and only play game 5 why not go ahead and try game 15 and game 25? Always been a 1.e4 player? Why not change things up and start playing 1.d4? Sure, you will have to step outside your comfort zone. It may be hard, but not impossible. With a bit of patience you can do it. In return, you will learn a lot of new things about yourself and will surely become a better player. Take it easy, experiment and you will definitely find a way to succeed and to improve your rating and playing strength in 2017!
