In our recent update on What’s New in Theory we set a little challenge for our readers.

It appears that quite a few missed it. So here is one more chance. In the following position Black overlooked an elegant tactical trick.

Can you spot the same?

its your move 12

Black to play

This was a blitz game. So you are allowed only 5 seconds to solve.

Or else you overstep the time limit.

A reader on our Face Book spot made an interesting suggestion.1…Rd4!? with the threat of 2…Rd8.It does not work as White has time to bring his king closer to his knight and rook. There follows 2.Kf1 f5 2. Bb1 Rxd2 3.Rxd2 Rc1+ 4.Ke2 Rxb1 and Black enjoys only slender advantage.Nevertheless, this was a fascinating try.

Dear Goldfinch, After 1...Rc4 White withdraws the bishop with 2.Bf3.

Dear Kai,1...f5 is what Black played. It gives the advantage, but not an immediate win.
