As you progress in chess, the quality of your opponents will get better and better. The intensity of attacks, the insanity of tactical combinations, the positional nuances… they will go to a whole new level.
At an advanced level, it is not merely about launching a crazy attack somehow…
… and expecting that your lower-rated opponent will blunder soon. That old approach won’t work.
The secret to winning at an advanced level in chess is by putting up an impenetrable wall while finding the holes in the enemy camp.
You have to know that every move your strong opponent makes is “subtly” building up an attack on any of your hanging pieces, weak squares, or the KING!
Being able to thwart these ideas is the first step to being an expert-level player.
Take Karpov for example. His opponents would often run out of ideas and ruin their position themselves. Why? Because there was often no “hole” in Karpov’s position.
Food for thought…
Often we forget what really separates a grandmaster from the rest. Can you guess what it is?
That it is hard to secure an advantage against a grandmaster but it is even harder to convert it into a full point.
Even though the engine bar shows a winning position, it often ends in a draw. How? Because the grandmaster comes up with tricks that baffles his human opponent until he gives away his plus. That’s “defense”, my friend!
As they say, half a point saved is half a point won.

Here’s what you will learn inside the training:
- The art of prophylaxis. Smell your opponent’s hidden idea behind his last move almost every time—and frustrate the hell out of him. If you still find yourself in a difficult position, eliminate as Grigorov teaches. Even a lost position is not lost at times, you see.
- Active vs passive defense. Ever felt like your opponent is overwhelming with constant threats, one after another? Ultimately, he ends up in a better position and wins the game. Ouch! You ended up in a downward spiral of passive defense. Try active defense next time. How? Get the course now.
- GM-level defense strategies. The difference between how a GM tackles a difficult position is unlike how a lower-rated player does. How does a GM actually think in a tight spot? What are his concerns and priorities? Only a seasoned, battle-tested GM can tell you that. In this course, you got a 1.5-hour video on this whole topic from one such GM.
- Key square control and deep calculation. The two things that an effective defensive strategy relies upon. Inside this training, you will master how to notice the key squares in time and calculate deep enough to see which move preempts the opponent’s threats… like in this position (diagram), 24… Qd6! saves the day for Black.
