Queen’s Indian Defense - tag

Queen’s Indian Defense is named because the queen’s bishop is developed with a queenside fianchetto. The opening was first played by Nimzowitsch in 1914 and it started to gain popularity in the next decade when it was adopted by top leading players of the time like Alekhine, Capablanca, and Bogoljubow.

Queen’s Indian Defense is a very solid opening that utilizes the queen’s side bishop to control the center and the long diagonal.  Black focuses on controlling the center with pieces rather than pawns like in all Indian systems.  Queen’s Indian borrows some of its ideas from Nimzo-Indian setups.
