Game 1

The first game we chose was Giri’s recent win over Anand in the Bilbao Masters. Having white, he employed a less common development to which the ex-World Champion didn’t react in the best way. He blundered a double attack right after the opening, which gave white a winning position. Interesting enough, Anand lost this game on time.

Game 2

Next, we’ll take a look at Axel Bachmann’s win over Alexander Morozevich in the last round of Barcelona GM closed tournament. White obtained a comfortable position in the Grunfeld thanks to his better piece coordination. It’s instructive to watch how he plays against black’s misplaced knight on a6 and launches an attack on the kingside.

Game 3

Last, we chose the game Grandmaster and successful book writer Mihail Marin won against the German Alexander Donchenko with the black pieces in the Kings Tournament which saw this year a match between the German and Romanian teams. Black obtained a better position after the opening and immediately punished his opponent’s mistakes. The game ended with a nice tactic by the Romanian Grandmaster.
