3 Best Games of the Week – 20

Games #1:

Our first game is the victory of Wojtaszek over Alexei Shirov from the European Club Championship. A neat win by White, showing an excellent opening preparation in the Semi Slav Defense.

Wojtaszek won the bishop pair and combined with a massive pawn center went on to crush his opponent with a direct attack.

Games #2:

Our second game was played in the Bilbao Masters first round and has Wesley So on the white side of a King’s Indian Defense against super GM Ding Liren from China.

Wesley seems to be very comfortable playing against the King’s Indian and in this game he showed great class sacrificing his queen for three minor pieces and outplaying his opponent afterwards. A must see game.

Games #3:

Finally we conclude our issue with the crushing victory by Vladimir Kramnik over his arch-rival Veselin Topalov. The game was played in the European Club competition where Kramnik had an outstanding performance.

He tried all kind of secondary openings with white against Nepomniatchtchi, Leko and in this game where he played 1.d4 2.Nf3 and 3.e3. Topalov did not play in the best way and soon was caught in a difficult middlegame with opposite color bishops in which his king was permanently weak. A very instructive game.
